4 Reflections on Different Types of Maturity:
1. Maturity is when you have a clear sense of how your emotions shift throughout the day. This is the type of self-awareness that gives you the information that you need to work with your emotions instead of against them. If your mind feels heavy and a dense emotion is passing through, you know that this is not the time to make judgments or serious decisions. Cloudy emotions encourage cloudy perceptions. Cloudy emotions make it easy to jump to conclusions.
A clear mind has very little tension while a cloudy mind is full of tension. Living in alignment with this truth means that it works to your advantage to save important assessments or life changing decisions for when your mind is more at ease. When the mind is especially cloudy, this is the time to practice gentleness with yourself and others. There is nothing wrong with moving slowly when a lot of heavy emotions are passing through you, it is actually the wise thing to do.
2. Maturity is not letting things drag on. Usually, your intuition will know when something needs to end before the mind is ready to close a chapter and open a new one. Whether it’s a job, relationship, friendship, passion project – it is helpful to remember that few things last a lifetime and when they do it is because they are really worth it.
Fighting against your intuition creates a lot of internal tension. Closing a chapter can be quite challenging but sometimes it is the exact thing you need to do to allow space for new magic to enter your life. If your life is too full, it’s hard for new incredible opportunities to fully reveal themselves to you. Let go where you need to let go.
3. Maturity is when you understand that your peace is directly connected to your equanimity and inner balance. Life is going to continue changing, there will be people who get you and those who don’t, challenges will appear out of nowhere but what ultimately matters most is how your perception is taking in life.
If your mind is inclined toward attachment and tension, then the challenges of life will be harder than they need to be. The greatest acceptance of personal responsibility is not only when you take ownership over your own happiness, but when you also accept responsibility over the way you react.
Life will never be eternally easy and pleasurable, but you can cultivate internal resilience that is grounded in the wisdom of impermanence. When you understand that everything is always changing, it makes it easier to go with the flow and enjoy things while they last without becoming overly attached. The more you embrace impermanence, the less you react. Reaction is impulsive and leads to you repeating the past. Intentional action is when you decide to slow down and choose new behaviors that are more conducive to your happiness.
4. Maturity is when you intentionally design your life. Even though the vast majority of things are outside of your control, the power of your actions can help you build a vibrant life. One of the places where you can really be intentional is with your goals and your growth. Being intentional about the ways you want to grow will help you elevate your emotional skill set and it will attract growth-minded people.
Understanding that you are an imperfect being but still putting energy into undoing behaviors that create struggle is one of the best ways to make your life smoother. Being honest about where you cause your own struggles and working on changing those unconscious patterns is the best way to set yourself up for success.
Being intentional about who your closest friends are is how you create a soothing environment for your nervous system. Life is challenging enough, you have every right to surround yourself with people who make you feel seen and heard. Establishing and feeding reciprocal relationships takes effort but building this good quality community is worth it.
