Acceptance is Freedom
Acceptance is the most direct path to inner peace and to the unfolding of new wisdom. Even though it is the simplest answer to relaxing our being and seeing things more clearly, acceptance is ignored because it is challenging to practice. Applying acceptance means you have to let go of what could be and finally embrace what is.
There is a common misconception that inner peace is a state of bliss, where you are coated in the sensation of pleasure and you never experience any troubles or hard feelings. This is far from the truth because the vast majority of life is a long series of uncontrollable events, which means that things will eventually happen that are not to your liking. Even though difficult times come in waves, you can prepare your mind to better handle the ups and downs by cultivating inner balance through acceptance.
Building a sense of non-reactiveness to your ever-changing emotions does not mean ignoring them, it means feeling them completely without letting them govern your mind and actions. Instead of becoming your emotions, you sit with them and observe them – there is a subtle difference here that helps you regain your power and become less attached.
Feeling the fire within you without fueling the fire is only possible through deep acceptance of whatever it is you are experiencing in the present moment. Acceptance connects you with reality, it ends the battle of wanting something different and it allows the mind to rest in the truth of the moment, even if that truth is uncomfortable or painful.
There is so much confusion around what inner peace really means because the mind is automatically geared towards hating unpleasant sensations. It wants things that are unpleasant to go away as soon as possible. Except life does not work that way, everything good or bad does ultimately end, but you cannot fully control how long things last.
Acceptance is true inner peace because it helps the mind no longer react with the tension of wanting something different. Once the tension of craving or aversion is removed, the mind is able to relax at a deeper level and your perception of reality becomes much clearer.
When you accept reality fully it becomes easier to remember the universal wisdom that everything is bound to change. Even though you may currently feel the lightness or heaviness of an emotion, this is all temporary. Living with the understanding that everything is subject to change creates a reservoir of resilience within you. It also becomes easier to understand that fighting your emotions or clinging to them will just fill you up with new tension.
Walking the path of inner peace means embracing your inner reality with deep acceptance. If you really want inner peace, stop chasing after pleasure as a way to hide from tough emotions, accept what is, and slowly the tension will melt away.
You can read a lot more about this topic in my new book How to Love Better.
